New YouTube Red Series ‘MatPat’s Game Lab’ Recreates Video Game Moments In Real Life

On his Game Theorists YouTube channel, Matthew “MatPat” Patrick espouses fun, unusual interpretations of video games. Now, in his new show, MatPat has found a new way to put a twist on video game culture. In MatPat’s Game Lab, which has arrived on YouTube Red, MatPat and his guests compete in real-life versions of popular video games.

In the first episode of Game Lab, which is available for free on the Game Theorists YouTube channel, MatPat invites creators from the Smosh Games and Warp Zone channels to join him in a parkour showdown modeled after he upcoming video game Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. While he competes against his fellow nerds, MatPat fills viewers in on the history of the Mirror’s Edge franchise and the ways in which its design resembles real-life freerunning. The educational quality possessed by Game Lab is part of its appeal; while other shows have taken on

the “video games in real life” concept, none of them have been as brainy as Game Lab.

“We created this series not only to entertain gamers,” MatPat told Forbes, “but also for the broader group of fans that are curious and love to learn just how close to reality these larger than life fictional moments really are.”

In total, the first season of Game Lab will consist of eight episodes, with games like Rocket League and Final Fantasy set to receive MatPat’s IRL treatment. To see what the next seven adaptations look like, you’ll need a subscription to YouTube Red, which costs $9.99 per month.
