Snapchat videos are designed to disappear after a set period of time, but some of the platform’s content deserves to live forever–and that’s where Slinger comes in. The new app, which launched at the beginning of 2016 and recently rolled out a new version, is co-founded by Snapchat star Chris Carmichael and branded as “a home for all your vertical videos.”
Slinger allows its users to download videos from apps like Snapchat and Periscope, thus saving them from permanent deletion. From there, the videos can be uploaded to Slinger, where they are collected in libraries that highlight individual creators and top trending videos.
There are many other apps that allow users to save their Snaps, but what makes Slinger unique is the sense of community it is looking to foster among its users. Carmichael, along with fellow co-founders Sharon Lourduraj and Gabe Rozenberg, is hoping to spotlight the Snapchat and Periscope content that takes a lot of time and effort to create. To him, those videos don’t deserve to be deleted right away. “Right now there’s a massive ocean of Snapchat content being created,” Carmichael told Forbes, “and there’s no gallery for that [content] to live on.”

Slinger is selling itself on a dangerous proposition–after all, if Snapchat ever reversed its course and gave its users the option to save their Snaps, Slinger would lose a great deal of its appeal. For the time being, though, Carmichael’s new app is serving an important need, and it has attracted some interest from brands. According to Forbes, Mashable, NHL, and Spotify are all using the app, as are 12,000 other users.
