Amazon Renews ‘Mozart In The Jungle’ For A Third Season

Amazon’s latest award winner will come back for a third round. Mozart in the Jungle, which takes place within the world of top-level classical music gigs in New York City, has been renewed for season three on Amazon.

Mozart in the Jungle first arrived in December 2014 and quickly drew a warm response thanks to its appealing blend of comedy and drama and the charismatic performance of lead actor Gael Garcia Bernal. Amazon hastily picked up a second season, which continued Mozart’s strong showing with an equally palatable follow-up that premiered in December 2015.

While most critics have shown a tempered response to Mozart (The AV Club, for example, called it “always just be out of reach of the ‘Great TV’ pantheon”), the show has been a big winner for Amazon. At the most recent Golden Globes, it won Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical, and Bernal picked up his own trophy for his performance. Justified or not, the wins continued Amazon’s award season success, and in announcing its decision to bring back Mozart, the digital retailer noted the strength of its current original programming library.

“‘Mozart in the Jungle’ bursts with creativity and passion, and offers audiences something truly unique,” said Joe Lewis of Amazon Studios in a press release. “Amazon is proud to have two of the most risky and enthralling comedy series on television today.” The other series referred to in Lewis’ statement is Transparent, which will also return for its own third season.

The third season of Mozart will partially take place in Europe. Production is expected to begin later this year, and while no release date has been announced, another December premiere would be sensible.
