NBC Teams With Above Average To Blend Sports With Broadway

In October 2015, digital comedy network Above Average launched The Kicker, a new destination dedicated to sports humor. Now, three months later, The Kicker is launching its most exciting series thus far. It has teamed up with NBC Sports for Sports…The Musical, which will imagine the top sports stories of the moment as glitzy Broadway productions.

Sports…The Musical will be produced by The Kicker and distributed by NBC Sports. The series will run for five episodes, with the first one arriving on January 14th and the next four following across the next four weeks.

In its quest to make sports stories feel like Broadway productions, The Kicker is pulling out the stops. It has turned to Brian Usifer, known for his work on Tony winner Kinky Boots, to supervise the music for Sports…The Musical. The actors in the show are Broadway vets, and in their first act, they’ll head to the world of basketball for a video that mashes up the world-beating Golden State Warriors with the theatrical bombast of Les Miserables.

Sports…The Musical will be classified as an NBC Sports Digital Short, where it will stand next to a few other notable projects. The best-known NBC Sports videos thus far are the two Ted Lasso videos, in which Jason Sudeikis plays a clueless American football coach who tries to transition to the world of soccer.

“In creating NBC Sports Digital Shorts, we aimed to provide more compelling content to sports fans than ever before,” said Brian Gilmore, Senior Director of Video at NBCSports.com. “As our first-ever sports comedy project, Sports…The Musical? is the perfect complement to our short-form video offerings, and we’re thrilled to partner with The Kicker.”

More videos from The Kicker can be found on its YouTube channel.
