Amazon Studios‘ first hour-long original series proved to be a hit with viewers, and as a result, it will now return for a second season. The programming division of the online retailed has renewed Bosch, the crime thriller based off a series of novels by Michael Connelly.
Bosch, which debuted in February, centers on tough LAPD detective Harry Bosch. It was first picked up as one of four series born out of Amazon’s second pilot season. Two more of those shows, Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle, have also been renewed for second seasons. The fourth, The After, was canceled before it aired a single episode.
Bosch‘s renewal shouldn’t come as a surprise; almost all of the original series Amazon has picked up have lasted at least two seasons. What’s more interesting is the news that Bosch had the strongest debut weekend of any Amazon original. While the popularity of Connelly’s books certainly contributed to that success, Bosch‘s big weekend shows that Amazon is picking up steam among viewers after receiving acclaim for series like Transparent (which won the platform its first two Golden Globe Awards).

“I am very excited about continuing the Bosch story with season two,” said Connelly, who also serves as executive producer for the show, in a release. “I love what we started with and I think our plans for the second season will make the show even better and more exploratory of the character of Harry Bosch. We have a great cast and crew and we are all going to be one year better at this. I can’t wait.”
Bosch will have no shortage of stories for its upcoming seasons. Connelly has authored 19 books in the series, and season two will draw from two of them: Trunk Music and The Drop. Among other plotlines, the titular detective will investigate the murder of a Hollywood producer and hunt a serial killer.
No release date for season two has been announced.
