Derek Jeter’s ‘The Players’ Tribune’ Partners With AOL To Distribute, Develop Content

To help boost its creative and growth efforts, The Players’ Tribune has turned to an outside source. The digital media platform based on athlete contributions has chosen AOL to be its distribution and co-production partner.

Founded in 2014 by ex-Major League Baseball player Derek Jeter with Legendary Entertainment, The Player’s Tribune is an online destination for professional athletes to submit their thoughts and personal experiences via podcasts, essays, videos, etc. As part of the deal, much of the Tribune’s sports-related content will be distributed across AOL’s networks. Additionally, The Player’s Tribune will work with AOL to create exclusive content for both platforms (lots of AOL-produced video is to be expected), as well as digital sporting events to bring fans’ offline experiences to the internet.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with The Players’ Tribune to bring innovative and engaging content to AOL and The Players’ Tribune,” said Dermot McCormack, President of AOL Videos and AOL Studios, in the release. “We look forward to creating one-of-a-kind experiences for the world’s biggest athletes and sporting events for sports fans everywhere.”

“We have taken a very measured approach to our strategic partners that share our vision and are thrilled to align with AOL,” added Jaymee Messler, President of The Players’ Tribune

.  “We look forward to making engaging and authentic athlete driven content together.”

AOL already has its finger on the pulse of the sports world. Back in October 2013, AOL debuted the My Ink series featuring six different sports players telling the stories of their tattoos. Then in November 2014, the media company launched a new web series called Win/Win, which pairs professional athletes with business executives to swap life and career advice. And more recently, AOL debuted the #AOLSportsSearch competition to find the next host for its upcoming sports-themed web series.

Though The Players’ Tribune debuted in late 2014, the digital media company had its official launch party on February 14, 2015. The event was sponsored in part by Porsche and featured appearances from JeterJason Collins, Evander Holyfield, and more professional athletes with well-known names.
