‘The Sidekick’ Gets February 3 Digital Release On iTunes, Amazon, Vimeo

Rob Benedict is riding the wave of video projects that use the Internet as their distribution platform of choice. The actor from the CW’s Supernatural series is releasing his short film The Sidekick on iTunes, Amazon, and Vimeo On Demand on February 3, 2015.

Written by Benedict and directed by Michael J. Weithorn (of The King of Queens), The Sidekick stars Benedict as Max McCabe, a 40-year-old, obsolete superhero sidekick who is fired by his boss Captain Wonder (played by Ron Livingston) in favor of a younger associate named Kid Loco (Jason Ritter). Max makes a new friend (Lizzy Caplan) and must learn to forge a new path for his life. The Sidekick co-stars Martin Starr, Ike Barinholtz, Josh Meyers, and Key and Peele’s Jordan Peele.

The Sidekick originally debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 before Benedict and Wiethorn took it on a festival tour. The short’s digital release news was originally reported by Variety, which also noted The Sidekick

will arrive on Hulu sometime in March.

“Quite honestly, we’re overwhelmed with the high praise that our short continues to receive,” Benedict told Variety. “With superheroes more prevalent in the pop culture zeitgeist than ever before, it’s nice to give the sidekick a little attention!”

“When Rob and I set out to make his small, funny and personal film for $75,000, we never imagined we would wind up assembling a cast comprised of some of the greatest, most respected comedic actors in the world,” said Weithorn. “From day one, this project was an absolute thrill — we can’t wait for it to make its digital debut.”

If you weren’t at Comic-Con in 2013, you’ll have to wait until February 3 to watch The Sidekick. In the meantime, you can enjoy the flick’s trailer and be glad you aren’t an unemployed sidekick like Max.
