‘The Wolf Of Wall Street,’ ‘Frozen’ Torrented Roughly 30 Million Times Each In 2014

Internet users downloaded a lot of illegal copies of The Wolf of Wall Street and Frozen in 2014. Those movies were the #1 and #2 most-pirated films of the past year, according to internet piracy tracking firm Excipio.

Excipio compiled its list of pirated movies using data from January 1 through December 23, 2014. The firm found Internet users across the globe downloaded The Wolf of Wall Street 30.035 million times, with Frozen not too far behind at 29.919 million torrents. The Frozen ranking should come as little surprise, as the animated film from Disney was so insanely popular that YouTube videos related to it pulled in over 477 million views.

The year’s top 20 most-pirated films involved a not-too-shabby showing of science fiction, fantasy, superhero, and action movies. In fact, the majority of the list’s titles center around these categories, with only a few non-genre films, such as 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, and Lone Survivor, on the list. The Internet also couldn’t seem to get enough of Jennifer Lawrence

movies; three of the titles on the most-pirated list starred the 24-year-old actress (X-Men: Days of Future Past, American Hustle, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire).

At the same time, Excipio encountered a duplicate title issue when compiling its list. The firm found RoboCop was pirated third most often in 2014 with 29.879 million downloads, but Excipio couldn’t determine how many of these involved MGM’s 2014 RoboCop reboot versus the original 1987 film of the same title. So the firm’s top 20 chart assumes both titles claimed the #3 spot simultaneously.

Here’s a complete list of the most-torrented films from 2014, including the number of downloads, the movie studio, and the release date of each film.
