Nickelodeon Inks TV Deal With WWE Web Series ‘Slam City’

WWE’s Slam City web series is advancing to round two. Nickelodeon picked up the stop-motion animated series for primetime airing on the network’s Nicktoons’ channel.

Starting on October 22, 2014, Slam City’s 26 episodes will air during the Nicktoons’ NickSports programming block on Wednesday nights from 9-11 p.m., along with other sports-themed series, specials, documentaries, and movies. The series is animated by Seth Green’s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (which is very busy these days) and produced in conjunction with Mattel’s Playground Productions.

Slam City follows the lives of famous WWE wrestlers who are forced to find “normal” jobs in Slam City after they’re fired by The Finisher. Each two-minute episode highlights one wrestler as he embarks on a new career trajectory. So far, the online video masses have watched John Cena fix cars as a mechanic, Randy Orton attend to animals as a zookeeper, and Alberto Del Rio figure out how to make proper coffee as a barista.

“True to the spirit of the NickSports programming block, WWE Slam City offers kids and their families a fun, fresh way to experience these exciting WWE Superstars, and the series is a great complement to our diverse, and ever expanding, sports lineup,” said Keith Dawkins, senior VP and general manager, Nicktoons, TeenNick and Nick Jr. to Variety.

“This exciting partnership will allow us to bring WWE’s passionate fan base to the NickSports programming block while also creating new WWE fans through Nickelodeon’s massive audience,” added Michelle D. Wilson, WWE’s chief revenue and marketing officer, to Variety. “WWE programming reaches 3 million kids each week and we’re sure they’ll be excited to watch WWE on Nicktoons.”

You don’t have to wait to watch Slam City on Nickelodeon if you don’t want to. The series launched in March 2014 on Maker StudiosCartoonium YouTube channel and on WWESlamCity.com, so head over to one of those platforms to watch your favorite wrestler-turned-average-joe deal with life outside of the ring.
