Lionsgate, Tribeca Latest To Announce Subscription Streaming Service

‘Tis the season for a flurry of new streaming video-on-demand services. Lionsgate and Tribeca Enterprises (the company behind the world-renowned Tribeca Film Festival) announced Tribeca Short List, the duo’s version of a film-based, streaming, subscription service set to debut in 2015.

According to Deadline, Tribeca Short List will launch sometime next year and will include “prestige independent films from around the world.” The site also reported there will be a heavy focus on getting leading indie creators, such as documentary filmmaker James Gilmore, to introduce the selected titles and discuss why they were included in the Short List library.

Lionsgate and Tribeca are the latest names to join the ever-growing roster of traditional media companies looking to expand their empires into the digital realm. Only a few weeks ago, HBO announced its decision to release a stand-alone, over-the-top SVOD service

for 2015. Shortly thereafter, CBS revealed its plans to launch its All Access subscription service, meant to serve its most loyal fans who refuse to pay for cable services.

Lionsgate and Tribeca haven’t yet provided a price point for their planned service. The two media companies also haven’t revealed if some of Lionsgate’s biggest titles – like The Hunger Games and Twilight – will be added to the monthly subscription service’s library.

While the indie film scene has a lot of dedicated followers, Lionsgate and Tribeca could likely score more subscribers if they were to include some of their more well-known, mainstream movies. We’ll just have to wait and see how the Tribeca Short List plays out.
