#SMWLA Preview: What Does Online Video Journalism Look Like?

From September 23-28, online companies, executives, and personalities will gather in Santa Monica for Social Media Week Los Angeles. To help showcase the incredible events that will be going down this year, Tubefilter will be offering daily previews of individual events. Check out the full schedule here and our schedule at a glance here.

Journalists have been saying “print is dead” for more than 40 years, and a new wave of online journalists are doing all they can to make TV news the next casualty. By catering to short attention spans, focusing on edgy and occasionally whimsical topics, and adopting a hip attitude, online video news channels are racking up millions of subscribers and billions of views.

What form does this modern online journalism take? Is the new industry required to follow old media ethics codes? Most importantly,

will online news video ultimately serve as a supplement for traditional news or will it be a replacement? All of these questions–and many more–will be discussed at Social Media Week Los Angeles by members of three major online news channels. Sterling Proffer will represent VICE and its rule-breaking brand of journalism, Steve Oh will represent the online empire of The Young Turks, and Shaya Tayefe Mohajer will represent the activism-focused work of TakePartTV. These panelists will detail their respective plans to either take down traditional media or, if they’re not feeling so radical, work alongside it.
