The channel best known for its adorable commander-in-chief is taking on a heavier subject. Soul Pancake is the home of The Forge, an awe-inspiring short film where creator Eric Lim discusses his sister’s suicide and offers emotional support to other people suffering from depression.
The Forge unravels Tanya Lim’s suicide with a metaphorical and special-effects laden production in which Eric must battle a demon who is simultaneously figurative and very real. “For anyone hurting like she was, use the pain,” instructs Lim in the video. “Let good come from bad. It will hurt, the hits will never stop, they only get tougher, but so will you. And hopefully, someday, I will too.”
Lim is not the first creator to tackle the issue of suicide, but his effort is one of the most beautiful and haunting ones out there. It’s a video that is well worth sharing; even if it only helps one person, it has achieved something great.
