Porn Sites Scoring Over 450 Million Uniques A Month

YouTube announced at its Brandcast that it now scores more than one billion unique users each month. On the other hand, a recent infographic claims that while YouTube is indeed top dog, a much lewder alternative is comfortably in second place. Fledgling adult video site Paint Bottle has noted that online porn videos score 450 million uniques each month, more than Netflix, Amazon, and Twitter combined.

Paint Bottle’s infographic was presented on the Huffington Post, and it paints a picture as to just how widespread pornographic content is on the Internet:

Unlike many other infographics, Paint Bottle does cite its sources, but it is notable that the uniques figure cited is almost two years old. One of HuffPo’s typically smart commenters has continued to unravel the statistic by noting that many people mask their IPs when accessing porn, making it seem like they are different people every time they’re in the mood. Also, Paint Bottle’s claim that it “just changed everything” with “HD” and “gorgeous women” is completely unsourced. Someone will have to check that one out (for science, of course).

Still, despite any statistical tampering, 450 million uniques is still undoubtedly a big number. An old urban legend states that the availability of porn on VHS is one reason why that format triumphed over Betamax, and porn appears to has an equally profound impact on the online video landscape. Clearly, if niche video hosting sites like Vimeo and Blip want to make up ground on YouTube, everyone is going to have to get naked.
