Taye Diggs is a Broadway star, an actor, and a generally talented person. In a new video on the ABC Dot Comedy website, he decides to expand his horizons, entering the hip-hop game with an assist from YouTube rapper DeStorm.
Diggs and DeStorm star in Taye Diggs Destroys Hip-Hop, a one-off mockumentary sketch where Diggs attempts to rap despite his unthreatening Broadway singing voice and generally stuffy personality. He claims that rap is short for “rhap-sody, as it was originally termed by one George Gershwin,” and yet he still manages, at least within the mythology of the sketch, to craft a hit. DeStorm plays along as his beleaguered straight man.
ABC Dot Comedy is a platform through which the network can leverage its TV stars on the Internet (Diggs stars in ABC’s Private Practice.) By enlisting DeStorm, ABC also proves they understand the online video space way better than Diggs’ character understands the soul of hip-hop.
