VEVO Rocks Out With Female Musicians In ‘You Play Like A Girl’

VEVO has become the most-watched network on YouTube thanks to its proliferation of frequently-viewed music videos. Recently, however, the company has begun to mix in some original series, six of which were unveiled during April’s VEVO NewFront. One of those series, You Play Like A Girl, has now debuted on its own channel within the VEVO network.

You Play Like A Girl follows former Hole, Motley Crue and Eagles of Death Metal drummer Samantha Maloney as she travels across the country seeking out young female musicians with whom she can jam. Five episodes have been released thus far (an impressive number, given the channel has only been around a couple weeks), and each one combines an earnest profile with some good old fashioned girl power rock and roll.

The five released episodes of You Play Like A Girl

have thus far notched almost 600,000 views, with several episodes topping 200,000, but it’s highly likely many of those hits are of the pre-roll variety. Still, the series has gained over 1,500 subs in less than two weeks; while You Play Like A Girl may not have a huge impact, any theoretical movement it generates bodes well for future VEVO series.

You Play Like A Girl is simple-minded stuff, but given the gargantuan traffic VEVO generates through its music channels, simple-minded could be exactly what the network is going for. At its heart, the series has good-intentions. Too many young female YouTube are reduced to a pretty face by simple-minded uploaders and commenters. VEVO’s new series show us those girls can rock out as well.
