Can Tommy Wiseau and Studio 8 Deliver Cult Horror Comedy?

Our last story on Atom.com’s summer slate left us with many questions about this intriguing untitled horror parody from Studio 8, starring cult horror favorite The Room’s Tommy Wiseau. Self-described as “a film with the passion of Tenessee Williams,” The Room was an unsuccessful low budget indie drama re-marketed as “a quirky new black comedy” that has become a worldwide phenomenon screened in sold-out theaters for six straight years since its release in 2005. Just watch these two drastically different trailers on the website and you’ll get it:

Bonus: there will be a midnight screening of The Room this coming Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 (on all 5 screens), 8000 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90046. As always, Wiseau will be in attendance to greet fans.

If you have ever seen The Room, or perhaps witnessed the strangely reoccurring Los Angeles billboard

or surfed the equally creepy website, you’ll understand why casting Tommy Wiseau in a horror parody is nothing short of brilliant. Under the creative direction of Studio 8’s Brock LaBorde (I’ve worked with the man -disclosure! disclosure!) Untitled Tommy Wiseau Studio 8 Horror Project will no doubt explore the limits of absurdity, nerd-dom, and the grotesque—I know this for a fact, because I saw a rough cut but I can’t talk about it yet. Well, I’ll say this: Tommy is in full-blown Wiseau mode.

The first episode is scheduled to air this fall (I’m putting my money on Halloween), with a television premiere on Comedy Central’s AtomTV followed by an online release. Keep an eye open for a sneak peek trailer expected to be released next week, where I’ll reveal the real title and more details about the series.
