Indie Filmmakers Honor Streamys With Shorts ‘n Spirits Showcase

Los Angeles-based Luminave Films and San Diego’s Mental Eclectic partnered up several months ago to create a unique social and showcasing event for independent filmmakers called Shorts ‘n Spirits Showcase (also know as S3LA, formerly called Sippin’ Shorts Social). For their March event, they’ve chosen to showcase some of the best in independent web series. “The internet is the best home for any indie filmmaker and a web series is a great way to gain the exposure for its audience”, said Craig Wilson, CEO of Mental Eclectic, “With the Streamys coming up we decided to help celebrate its spirit … by showing nothing but web series.”

But just to be clear, this is not a For Your Consideration screening, something we have seen cropping up this Streamy Award season. In fact, most of the web series featured aren’t even eligible for this year’s awards such as Pretty, which just premiered; The Resolve will premiere late February; and new series, Semi-Dead. Other featured series include the Indie Soap Award-Winning Compulsions, 2009 Streamy nominee After Judgment, and LUVumentary, which will begin production of season 2 next month.

S3LA will also feature the world premiere of The Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour, the newest comedy series co-produced by Jeff Lewis and Sean Becker, director of the The Guild. Says Lewis, “I had done sketch comedy in theater for many years and always wanted to widen my audience to the entire world. Sean was the fourth person I thought of.” Written by and starring Lewis and directed by Becker, the series is comprised of one five-minute sketch per episode. Co-stars are comprised of a bevy of notable actors from both the web and television world. The show is set to officially release in late March with a ten episode season.

The Shorts ‘n Spirits Showcase will take place on March 3, 2010 from 7-10pm at the Tavern on Brand in Glendale, CA (208 N. Brand Blvd, Glendale, CA 91203). Tickets for this all-ages event are $5 pre-sale / $10 at the door with tickets available at Eventbrite.
