For those of you that Need Girlfriends, now’s your chance. Two gals are heading your way with a clever publicity gimick wrapped in an catchy concept that, if well executed, could just be absolutely hilarious…or funny…or mildly entertaining.
The show, called 50 Dates in 50 States, will follow Bliss and Leary as they “zigzag their way up and down the states, documenting their dating and travel adventures through journal entries, videos, photographs, and a live map feed.” The journey will include a week cruise to Alaska, a couple days in Hawaii and will wrap-up Maine, the home state of Leary (the co-star).
That makes me think: cable TV is chalk full of cheap-to-produce date shows full of cheaper laughs, but as I browse through Tilzy.TV, I see that the date space on internet-TV is grossly underserved. Sure, if you want some contrived and awkward date drama, you can check out In-Betweens of Holly Malone (Tilzy.TV Page) or, for the witty reflections on many dates gone wrong, head to 39 Second Single, but for an off-the-cuff peek at an awkward rendezvous, there’s not much…yet.
I’m hoping 50 Dates in 50 States will push the TV dating concept a bit further than the protectors of old TV have permitted to date. My fingers are crossed for something a bit more wry and self-reflexive than MTV would dare…I’m thinking The Office meets Blind Date. But I’m getting ahead of myself; it’ll be interesting to see what actually transpires here.
In line with their 50 states shtick, the girls will lock and load today, July 4th, 2007. Check out the trailer….
