Microdramas have the highest ad density of any app category–and user downloads have topped 1 billion

Microseries is the word of the moment.

Everyone is getting into them: Legacy Hollywood studios are signing lengthy production deals, content creators are both making and headlining series, digital platforms are adding microseries hubs, brands are making their own microsoaps, the WWE is putting its wrestlers on ReelShort, and (perhaps the biggest sign of the times) late-night TV is parodying the sh*t out of it all.

But is the industry hype translating to significant viewer engagement?

According to new data from Mintegral…maybe?

Mintegral, which pitches itself as a platform to “Turn Engagement Into Growth With AI,” reports that downloads for microseries apps reached 1.45 billion in the first half of 2026, a 95.5% YoY jump from the first half of 2025.

That’s impressive compared to other app types: Mintegral says non-gaming applications averaged growth of 16.6% in the same time period. (More context: The next-highest-growth category after microseries apps was education apps, with a 25.3% YoY jump. Ecommerce apps, meanwhile, were the only category to see an overall decrease, with downloads dropping 4.4% YoY.)

The top downloaded microseries app was FreeReals, with 195.8 million downloads; in second place was NetShort, with 98.9 million.

What caught our eye even more than download numbers, however, is Mintegral’s data on advertising.

Despite their downslide in downloads, ecommerce apps ran the largest volume of ads in the first half of 2026: 13.3 million total, across 12,800 apps.

During the same time period, 1,887 microseries apps ran 3 million ads–which means it had higher ad density (aka the number of ads divided by the number of platforms) than ecommerce.

In fact, it had the highest ad density of any app category–and had notable density across multiple regions.

Microseries apps had an ad density of 1,100 in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region, “making it the only category to achieve that level of density in three regions,” Marketing Dive reports. In North America, microseries apps had an ad density of 977 per app.

For comparison, ecommerce apps had an average ad density of 545 in Europe, 804 in Southeast Asia, and 581 in Asia-Pacific.

So what does this mean? Is it surprising?

Not entirely. Microseries apps are often AVOD, allowing users to watch content for free in exchange for watching ads. This makes them an appealing destination for both advertisers and viewers. It’s pretty much the YouTube model: viewers keep coming because they can watch anything they want for free, and brands keep coming because they know their ads will reach a significant number of people.

Microseries having the highest ad density and the most rapid growth in downloads does point to increased engagement from both brands and viewers. But in order to truly judge if microseries apps are retaining eyeballs, we’ll have to see watch time metrics–not only downloads.

That being said, we did get a glimpse of watch time from a previous study: Back in February, a report from research consultancy/industry analyst Omdia showed that microseries apps like ReelShort, DramaBox, and FlickReels are getting more usage per day per user than streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+.
