Is it time to bring YouTube Music Nights to India?
Earlier in June, YouTube announced the launch of YouTube Music Nights. By broadcasting concerts featuring stars like Kacey Musgraves, YouTube is looking to match the cultural cachet of rivals like TikTok and Twitch.
Highlighting American pop stars is a reasonable move, but if YouTube really wants to show what sets its platform apart from the competition, it should set its sights on India. That’s where singer Kumar Sanu is building a big audience, and he deserves a Music Night of his own.
Sanu is a playback singer — an artist who records tracks that Bollywood actors perform via lip sync. Across a legendary career that has spanned decades, Sanu has recorded numerous soundtracks in a multitude of languages.
On YouTube, Sanu promotes upcoming releases and connects with fans. That’s working well for him. During the last full week of June, Sanu added 650,000 new subscribers to reach 8th place in the Global Sub Top 50.
A Kumar Sanu edition of Music Nights would affirm YouTube’s pop culture presence in a country where TikTok isn’t even available. It would remind viewers that YouTube has been a globetrotting force for more than two decades.
Plus, international music events can connect an artist from one country to fans in another. Consider the example of Fer Jalil, a Mexico-based creator who finished 33rd in the Global Sub Top 50 after getting 300,000 new subscribers. In one of her recent videos, she attended the premiere for the Billie Eilish‘s tour film Hit Me Hard and Soft. That experience helped Fer Jalil achieve her highest weekly view count of 2026.
YouTube has already shared the stats that show how big of a boon it is for pop stars. Now, it can point to its impact among international fanbases, too.
If that isn’t enough evidence that Kumar Sanu deserves a Music Night, I don’t know what else I need to say. Come on, Lyor Cohen. Let’s make it happen.
