Brian Barczyk, who helped millions learn to love reptiles, has died

Brian Barczyk has passed away. The reptile expert, who shared his passion with millions of fans on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, died on January 14 at the age of 54.

The cause of death was pancreatic cancer. Barczyk received his diagnosis in March 2023 but continued to appear in videos even as his condition worsened. One week before his death, he uploaded a farewell video he recorded over several months. His emotional address to his 5.3 million YouTube subscribers has been seen more than 3.2 million times.

Barczyk emerged on YouTube in 2008, when he began posting videos to a channel called SnakeBytesTV. His enthusiasm for reptiles — and snakes in particular — made him an endearing figure for his viewers. When he conducted a Reddit AMA in 2015, he was asked to name his favorite snake. “I just can’t pick,” he replied. “It’s like asking a mom to pick their favorite child. I love them all.”

SnakeBytesTV received a boost in 2010 when Barczyk earned the support of Next New Networks, an influential venture that was eventually acquired by YouTube. Over the next decade, Barczyk’s career continued to gain steam. He appeared on a Discovery show called Venom Hunters in 2016, signed with multi-channel network Fullscreen in 2017, and, alongside his wife Lori, launched a zoo called The Reptarium in 2018. In recent years, he grew his following on TikTok, where his short-form herpetology updates reach more than seven million followers.

Barczyk received his cancer diagnosis as The Reptarium broke ground on an addition known as the LegaSea Aquarium. A memorial page on the Reptarium website invites fans to honor Barczyk by buying a LegaSea wall plaque, sending flowers to his family, or sponsoring an “animal ambassador.”

In his farewell video, Barczyk expressed optimism about the impact his life’s work can still have. “My hope is that the LegaSea Aquarium, my legacy…is going to last a long time,” he said.
