Thanks to Generation Alpha, a random U.S. state is one of the biggest trending topics on YouTube Shorts — even though that state’s homegrown creators are struggling to find space in the Global Top 50.

As per usual, the list of the 50 most-watched YouTube channels of the week included some strange bedfellows. Here are some of the highlights:
Chart Toppers
Last week, MaviGadget fell out of the global top five entirely, but it rebounded in a big way during the third week of February. The YouTube Shorts channel, which often showcases gadgets, gizmos, and other pieces of machinery, increased its viewership by 58% week-over-week. That pushed it into the #1 spot in our worldwide ranking, where it is holding court with 664.4 million weekly views. If MaviGadget can repeat that performance next week, it will reach 20 billion lifetime YouTube views. Until then, a second #1 finish this year will have to do.
Last week’s #1 finisher is the only other channel above 600 million views in this week’s Global Top 50. Like many other Vietnamese creators, ToRung has parlayed a national interest in short-form content into an international empire of ridiculous videos. In ToRung’s case, the comedy creator excites viewers around the world by attaching outlandish thumbnails to his video. That strategy helped him accrue 604.8 million views during the week that was. ToRung is just behind MaviGadget in terms of weekly views, but the latter channel has more than twice as many subscribers.
T-Series almost always finishes either first or second in the Global Top 50, but this chart offers a rare sight: A third-place designation for the most-watched and most-subscribed YouTube channel of all time. The Indian record label lost 19% of its traffic week-over-week, leaving it with 557.1 million weekly views. Though MaviGadget and ToRung are ahead of T-Series for now, the South Asian sensation has set many records over the past decade. It will reach 250 billion lifetime YouTube views this year, and (unless YouTube changes how it counts things) those other channels will not.
Two Canadian channels occupy the final two positions in this week’s global top five. The first of those north-of-the-border standouts is Diary of 4, which is making its third consecutive appearance in the upper tier of our worldwide ranking. The family-oriented channel found itself with the fourth-most YouTube viewership in the world after it collected 525.5 million weekly views our our most recent seven-day measurement period. Diary of 4 is now over ten billion lifetime views on YouTube, making it one of the all-time most-watched hubs in its home country.
Sierra & Rhia FAM rounds out this week’s global top five. With a library of (mostly) YouTube Shorts videos, this Canadian kids’ hub pulled in 512.3 million weekly views.
Top Gainers
Let’s return to the mysterious U.S. state I mentioned at the top of this post. Surprise! It’s Ohio.
The Buckeye State appears in viral video titles on Shorts with alarming frequency. At first, I thought all the Ohio mentions in my Shorts feed were the result of some form of geotargeting. I live in Ohio myself, and since I’ve never seen a giant MrBeast outside of my window, I didn’t think creators around the world were referencing my home state.
But it’s clear to me now: Generation Alpha loves Ohio. Today’s kids reference the Midwestern state in many of their memes, and I’m still not sure why. Is it because of previous memes? Is it because creators like Markiplier, iShowSpeed, and the Paul brothers are from there?
No matter the reason, we live in a world where a Bangladesh-based channel called Ohio Cat Bombastic can get 235.7 million weekly views and reach 39th place in the Global Top 50. According to OCB, us Ohio residents play with weird dolls, greet each other by putting our hands through the wall, and celebrate birthdays by lighting Spongebob and Patrick on fire. The ideas behind these videos make as much sense as the random cat who watches from the bottom of the screen.
I’m slowly starting to understand. Gen Alpha loves Ohio. Gen Alpha also loves Master Oogway’s use of the song “Mr. Bombastic”. So that means that Gen Alpha loves cats too, right? That would put them in line with every other generation that has ever used the internet. No matter how confusing today’s memes are, some things never change.
