During January, five YouTube channels based in the U.S. managed to get at least one billion monthly views. Three of those channels have seen dramatic viewership increases after leaning into YouTube’s Shorts format.

Meanwhile, a channel with a lot of long-form content is the clear #1 in our U.S. Top 100.
Chart Toppers
Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes kicked off the year by uploading several videos that run longer than an hour. The California-based channel’s epic-length toddler sing-alongs are getting views at a rate no other videos can match. During the first month of the new year, Cocomelon counted 2.6 billion views on its primary YouTube channel. That is at least twice as many views as every other channel in the U.S. Top 100 — so there’s no question Cocomelon deserves to be this month’s chart-topper.
The #2 channel in the U.S. Top 100 is, like Cocomelon, a record breaker on YouTube. MrBeast‘s channel has always hovered near the top of our weekly and monthly charts, but it did not become a regular presence in the U.S. top five until Jimmy Donaldson increased the frequency of YouTube Shorts uploads on his primary channel. In the first month of 2023, the long-form and short-form videos on MrBeast combined for 1.2 billion views.
Next up in our monthly U.S. viewership ranking is Kideo Games. Much like MrBeast, it has succeeded with a combination of long-form and short-form content. The main difference is that Kideo Games first broke out on Shorts, where its playthroughs of addictive mobile games have logged billions of views. 1.1 billion of the channel’s 4.5 billion lifetime YouTube views came during January 2023.
Kids Diana Show ranks fourth in the January 2023 monthly chart. The Florida-based family vlog has turned daughter Diana into a YouTube star, and her brothers Roma and Oliver are now becoming familiar faces for toddlers around the world. The center of the Diana universe added 1.09 billion monthly views in January. That was just enough traffic to earn fourth place.
Alan Chikin Chow rounds out this month’s U.S. top five. The comedian is one of the most recognizable stars within YouTube’s short-form community. His quick-witted videos received 1.08 billion monthly views to start the year.
Top Gainers
While Alan Chikin Chow establishes himself in the comedy category on YouTube Shorts, a separate community of creators is owning the format with food videos. The collabs, trends, and memes shared among YouTube’s 60-second chefs are bringing billions of views to their videos.
Albert, the daring foodie who stars on the Albert Can Cook channel, is both a cause and a beneficiary of YouTube Shorts’ rising culinary community. After kicking off his channel during the pandemic, Albert now ranks among the most-watched chefs on YouTube. And if you watch enough of his videos, you’ll definitely learn Jeffrey Bezos’ job title and birth year.
During the first month of 2023, Albert’s YouTube content received 395.5 million views. That was good for a 66% month-over-month viewership increase, which pushed Albert up to 66th place in our U.S. Top 100. (That’s a devilish amount of 6s!)
With 6.2 million subscribers, Albert is cultivating a dedicated fan base as well. His channel will continue to grow in February — and that will be good news for gourmands across YouTube.
Channel Distribution
This month, 75 channels in the Top 100 are primarily active on YouTube Shorts.
