Meghan Rienks isn’t the first YouTube star to venture into the literary realm, and she won’t be the last — but the 25-year-old lifestyle vlogger and actress insists that her debut memoir, You’re Not Special, will present a more unvarnished look at her life than comparable titles.
In Special, which is available for preorder now and officially hits shelves on Feb. 9, Rienks will dicuss being raised in a small town of 8,000 people, her struggles with mental health, drunken debachueries, and how she launched her vlogging career after suffering from a bad bout of mono. Rienks will also offer life advice along the way, and the book’s brash title serves to assert that, “despite what you’ve been told, your problems are not unique, your struggles have taken form in everybody else’s life too,” according to its jacket description.
Special is published by Gallery Books — a Simon & Schuster imprint that is also behind titles from Tyler Oakley and Miranda Sings. Rienks says that she wrote the book over a year ago, and that she didn’t have a ghostwriter or co-author — but that she gave her advance back to the book’s first publisher because they wanted her to take a safer route. “I’m really happy that I stuck to my guns and I didn’t edit this to be a traditionally successful influencer book,” she says, noting that the book will feature curse words, drug use, and delve into her challenging relationship with her parents.
Rienks is experienced in proffering life advice in her long-running podcast, Don’t Blame Me. As an actress, she has appeared in Freakish, Mr. Student Body President, and The Honor List. She also launched a home accessories subscription box called Martie in April.
