Chrissy Teigen Becomes Third Major Celeb To Proclaim Snapchat Defection

Chrissy Teigen has become the third celebrity in roughly a month to publicly proclaim her disdain for Snapchat. Following complaints by both Kylie Jenner and Rihanna that caused the company’s stock to plummet, the string of criticism illustrates the outsized role creators play with respect to any platform’s success.

Teigen cited Snapchat’s much-despised app redesign as well as an ad that appeared to make light of domestic violence as her reasons for departing. “I stopped using Snap,” she tweeted over the weekend. “The update, the constant complaints of people not being able to find me, plus the Rihanna poll…no bueno.”

Teigen is a model, cookbook author, and host who is also wildly popular on social media for her hot takes and quick wit with respect to the issues of the day. She counts 10 million followers on Twitter and 16.5 million followers on Instagram.

Both of her criticisms have been made before. Since the rollout of the redesign, creators and celebrities have bemoaned the fact that their ‘Stories’ no longer appear alongside users’ real-life friends but instead have been moved into the Discover section alongside premium publishers. And earlier this month, Rihanna rebuked Snapchat for running an ad that asked users whether they would rather slap her or punch her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown, who assaulted the singer in 2009. Snapchat subsequently removed the ad and apologized.

It remains to be seen how Teigen’s defection will impact Snapchat. Jenner’s comments are reported to have cost the company $1.3 billion, while Rihanna’s allegedly sunk its valuation by $800 million.
