Netflix is developing a family of experimental apps that target TV and filmmakers and aim to streamline their production processes. The apps seek to help filmmakers with crew management, scheduling, and budgeting, according to Variety — which notes that one of these apps, Move, has been in beta at the company since last November.
Move, which is available as both a mobile and web service, integrates with email and SMS to notify crew members of scheduling changes. It also distributes scripts to everyone involved in a particular scene, and generates daily wrap reports. The app, which seeks to replace the piles of paperwork that crews typically rely on, was first piloted during production of the second season of Netflix’s hit women’s wrestling comedy, Glow, in November. It has since been used on 10 other productions, Variety reports.
And more apps could be forthcoming. Netflix reportedly has a team of roughly 35 people working on similar projects — a fleet that frequently collaborates with the engineers that are building its consumer-facing apps. Netflix ultimately hopes that the apps will be used by tens of thousands of people on production teams, per Variety, including its own crews as well as third party programmers.
