The rise of mobile live streaming platforms like YouNow, Musical.ly, and Live.me have created a new class of young, influential content creators. One of those up-and-comers is Zach Clayton, a 17-year-old whose BruhItsZach channel on YouNow gathered a large audience. Clayton now reaches his fans across the internet, including on YouTube, where he now has more than one million subscribers. He has also recently made strides in his musical career, launching several singles. Here’s our chat with him:

Zach Clayton: Very humbling and gratifying at the same time. I have the best fandom that has supported me through it all and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

TF: Given that you are active on a lot of different platforms, what type of content would you say works best on YouTube in particular?

ZC: I like to take trending content and put my own twist on it. I’ll often ask my supporters what they want to see. I like getting their input.

TF: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the vlogging world?

ZC: Be consistent and committed to work every day, but also have fun because your content should be representative of yourself.

TF: What is your songwriting process like?

ZC: I have an amazing team of writers. We have an easy process that works for us, and we write about my personal experiences so it’s fun and it has worked out really well for us to this point.

TF: What is a common mistake you think brands make when they try to engage with young creators?

ZC: The creators and the brands need to make sure they have a truly authentic fit when partnering with each other. I try to work with brands that inspire me and that I am proud to represent. I think that’s the most important thing to remember when building a personal brand and appropriate partnerships.

TF: Why do you think platforms like YouNow were able to grow as quickly as they did?

ZC: With live streaming, your supporters get to know you personally and they feel closer to you as streaming content is raw and unedited. Your viewers are going through experiences with you in real time. It’s a bonding experience.

TF: As someone who was quick to adopt mobile live streaming, what trends do you think will come to the online video industry in the future?

ZC: No one really knows what’s coming next because the video industry is constantly changing at a rapid pace, which is the cool thing about it, and what makes it fun and unique.

TF: Do you think your style has changed in noticeable ways since you started making content?

ZC: Oh very much, I started out pretty raw and very wild, but as I’ve grown up I’ve toned it down a bit and learned a lot about editing and putting out good quality content. It’s still very important to me to stay true to myself at the same time.

TF: What’s next for your channel? Any fun plans?

ZC: I have a lot of high quality, original content video releases coming up, made by yours truly Zach Clayton. Also, stay tuned for some more dis-tracts and a new super crazy style of music!
