Lionsgate, which plans to spend $25 million per year on influencer-led feature films, is providing new opportunities for creators with large digital followings. The latest four performers to team up with the studio are Meghan Rienks, Sasha Pieterse, Arden Cho, and Karrueche Tran, who will be the four stars of high school comedy feature film called Honored.
Variety, which first reported on the Honored announcement, noted that all four of the film’s stars are popular on social media. Here, they will play a quartet of high-schoolers who used to be good friends before drifting toward disparate cliques. In response to a tragedy, they will reunite to cross items off a list of stunts they wrote while they were in eighth grade.
For this movie, Lionsgate is working with Popsugar, which revealed during NewFronts that it would produce Honored as one of the first projects from its own newly-minuted film studio. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with this talented cast and filmmaking team, made up almost exclusively of women,” Lionsgate’s Lindsay Gomez told Variety. “Popsugar’s platform supporting empowerment and strong female representation aligns with our vision for this film. We look forward to working with this passionate group as we bring this script to life.”
The production team for Honored also includes Cinestar Pictures, the studio run by actress Zoe Saldana and her two sisters. Untitled Entertainment, which represents stars like Rienks and Pieterse, is also involved in the picture, as is Destro Films. Elissa Down, Honored‘s director, previously worked with online video creators as the writer and director of AwesomenessTV’s Confess.
The release date for Honored and the platform on which it will first be available are not yet known. The film starts shooting this week.
