Indie Spotlight: Spend Your Halloween With Some Well-Told ‘Urban Legends’

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.

Halloween season is here, which means it’s the right time to share an exemplary horror web series. Luckily, writer and director Luke Mordue has provided just that. His company Mordue Pictures is behind Urban Legends, which retells well-known spooky stories in a tense and atmospheric manner.

The tales of terror revisited in Urban Legends are famous campfire fare. You might have heard them before, and you may have even seen them adapted for the screen. For his first episode, Mordue takes on the classic “High Beams” story; he follows that up by offering his version of “The Licked Hand.”

Given how well-known these stories are, Mordue probably isn’t going to surprise too many viewers with the plots he presents, but that’s not what makes Urban Legends good. With its terrific camerawork, creepy music, and perfect pacing, the series is a tense viewing experience. When watching each episode, you can assume a twist is coming, but your heart will be pounding while you wait for it.

Right now, three episodes of Urban Legends are available on YouTube. According to Mordue’s website, two more installments will round out the first season.
