Over the years, The Simpsons’ legendary couch gags have taken us across the universe, into the future, and even into other TV shows. Now, the opening credits tradition of America’s favorite animated family is venturing into another new frontier: It’s heading to virtual reality. For the upcoming Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons’s 28th season, Google Spotlight Stories will distribute a VR couch gag on iOS and Android devices.
The couch gag will be titled “Planet of the Couches,” and it will accompany “Treehouse of Horror XXVIII,” the 27th annual Halloween-themed Simpsons episode and the show’s 600th installment overall. Viewers who download the Google Spotlight Stories app on any Google Cardboard-compatible device will be able to check out the new gag as well as with the other animated content that will live alongside it. Other shorts distributed by Spotlight Stories include a holiday special from the team behind Wallace and Gromit and an impressive film called Pearl.
If you’re a true Simpsons diehard, you can also watch the VR couch gag on a custom device. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 25,000 limited edition Google Cardboard viewers have been made available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
