While much of the online video community flocked to Anaheim for VidCon, HBO shared updates about two web adaptations of its own. The premium cable network has dropped teaser trailers for Insecure, created by Issa Rae, and High Maintenance, created by Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld.
Insecure will serve as Rae’s attempt to translate the appeal of her web series Misadventure of an Awkward Black Girl to television. While the multi-talented 31-year-old’s new show will be tonally different from the one that first made her a web celeb, it will feature some similarities. As she did in Awkward Black Girl, Rae will star in Insecure’s leading role, through which she will examine topics like romance and race.
If Insecure conveys its titular feeling to viewers, perhaps High Maintenance can mellow them out. Just like the web series on which it is based, the TV version of Sinclair and Blichfeld’s smoky comedy will capture the stories of individual New Yorkers who are connected only by their shared weed dealer (played by Sinclair). After beginning as an acclaimed independent project and later getting picked up by Vimeo, High Maintenance is now set to make another jump.
While HBO hasn’t announced exact release dates for High Maintenance or Insecure, both programs are expected to premiere in the fall.
