With its on-demand video service, VHX has provided an appeal option for creators who wish to sell their work online. Now, VHX is taking its relationship with creators a step further: It is giving them a chance to build their own streaming video platforms. The company has announced the launch of a new API that brings its backend technology to developers and media companies.
Developers are now able to access VHX’s API through the company’s website. From there, they can build their own Netflix-like services, which can in turn be distributed across the web and over-the-top devices. This offering builds on VHX’s previous work; in 2015, the company announced an expansion of its platform, through which it would help channels like Black&Sexy build their own subscription-based services.
The API, as with VHX’s other offerings, is designed to be both flexible (it supports three different programming languages at launch) and cost-effective. By offering a more affordable option than, say, MLB Advanced Media’s popular API, VHX is looking to stay competitive by attracting a wide user base.

“We’re excited to open up our API to the developer community and help people build their own video platforms,” said VHX co-founder and CEO Jamie Wilkinson. “We got into this business in 2012 in large part because there wasn’t a developer friendly, end-to-end solution for premium video – everything required large upfront commitments and only partially solved the problem.”
