Eleven years after an underwhelming film adaptation, A Series of Unfortunate Events is springing back to life, this time on Netflix. A teaser released on YouTube–but not on the official Netflix channel–appears to give viewers a peek at the upcoming adaptation of the dark children’s book series of the same name.
Netflix announced its plan to adapt A Series of Unfortunate Event in November 2014. Paramount Television is producing and Daniel Handler, who wrote the book series under the pen name Lemony Snicket, is signed on as executive producer.
Since making this announcement, Netflix has been quiet on the Unfortunate Events front. We still haven’t heard who will direct, write, or star in the series, nor do we know how many of the series’ 13 books each season will cover.

The new teaser–if it is legit–begins to provide some enticing clues. It contains references from throughout the series, ranging from the first book’s marriage license to the twelfth book’s concierge hat, suggesting a grand scope that could encompass all 13 books. A soundtrack from The Dresden Dolls and a generous helping of howling wind provide Gothic touches, as does the silhouetted presence of Count Olaf, the series’ primary antagonist.
The 35-second teaser has generated a lot of excitement among Series of Unfortunate Events fans, but those of us who are eager to see how Netflix adapts the gloomy saga of the Baudelaire children still have a long time to wait. The streaming platform hasn’t announced a release date for the series, though several outlets believe it will arrive sometime in 2016.
UPDATE: Netflix has denied any involvement in the teaser. “This was not released from Netflix and not anything official,” a company rep told Variety.
