Reddit Unveils Plans To Create Original Video Content, Starting With Its AMAs

Back in February 2015, Reddit announced its first new web series, Cyborg Nation, in conjunction with Wired. But now, the social site is extending its original video content plans even further. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian revealed the Reddit Video initiative during the TechCrunch Disrupt NY event on May 6, 2015.

Ohanian told TechCrunch co-editor Alexia Tsotsis how Reddit Video will initially aim to turn the site’s famous “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) forum-based text interviews into video versions (previous AMAs have featured YouTube stars like John Green

and Felicia Day, among many other participants.) “Video is a pretty hot thing right now, and we wanted to get the best people we could to launch Reddit Video,” Ohanian said, as reported by VentureBeat.

The Verge reports Reddit’s video initiative will bring site users’ stories to the online video masses, as well. Stephen Greenwood and Jordan Oplinger from The Verge are slated to lead Reddit Video.

Reddit is the most recent example of a website looking to start producing its own content instead of just enabling the sharing of other people’s creations. Tech company and data-sharing site BitTorrent is also turning into a video publisher, starting with its first original series Children of the Machine in the fall of 2015. BitTorrent recently partnered with Rapid Eye Studios to develop even more video content in the future.

No official launch date has been set for Reddit Video as of yet.
