Aziz Ansari To Create, Star In Comedy Series For Netflix

Netflix has teamed up with Aziz Ansari for a new comedy series. The streaming video platform has announced an as-of-yet untitled, ten-episode series that will star the Parks & Recreation funnyman in the lead role.

Ansari, who portrayed Tom Haverford for seven seasons on Parks & Rec, will serve as both the co-creator and the star of the new show, which Netflix has given a direct-to-series order. Alan Yang, an executive producer for Parks & Rec, co-created the series alongside Ansari, and a strong supporting cast includes Archer star H. Jon Benjamin, Dear White People producer Lena Waithe, Tim & Eric weirdo Eric Wareheim, and Saturday Night Live alum Noel Wells.

The comedy series will continue Ansari’s existing relationship with Netflix. The 32-year-old stand-up comedian has released two specials through the streaming platform. The first, Buried Alive, arrived in 2013, and the second, Live From Madison Square Garden, followed in 2015.

Ansari’s series also adds to an increasing number of comedy projects within Netflix’s original programming library. Judd Apatow is planning a sitcom called Love, while Arrested Development executive producer Brian Grazer has noted that more episodes of the beloved comedy series are on the way.

The title isn’t the only unknown element of Ansari’s comedy series. Plot details are also sparse; Deadline notes “the project features semi-autobiographical elements and deals with dating and relationships.” From that description, it sounds like just about every other sitcom ever made, so we look forward to hearing the specific details that will set it apart from the rest.
