YouTube Spaces LA, NY To Host Terminator, Wired, Discovery, More Creators In 2015

YouTube Spaces had a big year in 2014, hosting events like Comedy Hack Day and #Tubeathon and welcoming a snazzy New York location into the Spaces family. But 2015 is set to be even bigger for all the United States-based Space establishments.

YouTube Space LA and New York have several large residencies planned for 2015 with many of YouTube’s creators, as well as top-level media companies like Wired and Discovery Digital Networks.

Starting off the list of residents is Wired, who plans to make gaming and technology-themed programming and collaborate with YouTubers interested in the same topics at YouTube Space LA. Wired will be the first Condé Nast Entertainment-owned property to use YouTube’s North American Spaces. Condé Nast is working with YouTube Space NY to secure some residencies for its other brands to mirror Wired’s presence in LA.

Next up at YouTube Space LA is Discovery Digital Networks (DDN). The media company will use the production studio to shoot episodes of DNews and TestTube Daily for its science-based network TestTube. YouTubers Julian Huguet and Crystal Dilworth are just a few of the LA-based creators Discovery has tapped to help develop content. DDN also hopes to leverage YouTube Space LA’s stages to create projects on a scale larger than its current production setup could accommodate.

FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) is also set to reside in LA for a while. The media company and its digital studio Tiny Riot! plan to film episodes for FMNA’s YouTube channel BUZZR. FMNA will recreate classic game shows like Family Feud and Minute To Win It and develop new games each season which will be played by popular YouTube stars.

YouTube Space LA and NY will also welcome some Hollywood initiatives into their quarters. In spring 2015, some of YouTube’s creators will take part in Terminator-themed web episodes to promote Paramount Pictures and Skydance‘s Terminator: Genysis. Both LA and NY Spaces will get 3D green screen technology installed to help re-create the sets from the upcoming movie.

Additionally, Universal Pictures will be working on some projects at the North American Spaces based on its film Minions, which debuts in July. YouTube will provide several of its creators with access to the Minions world, and will host a party inspired by the film’s story a little closer to the flick’s release.

YouTube Space LA is no stranger to Hollywood-based initiatives, as the location previously welcomed a replica Godzilla set for its creators to use and hosted Legendary Pictures‘s Halloween video contest judged by filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro.

Finally, YouTube will have one of its own native creators using YouTube Space LA in the first quarter of 2015. Rosanna Pansino, who boasts over 3 million subscribers on her baking-themed channel, will use LA’s studios to create videos for her fans. Pansino was initially featured as one of the top creators in YouTube’s TV ad campaign.

In addition to all these residencies, YouTube Space LA and NY have restructured some of their workshops and courses. Creators will have the option of choosing between four different themed tracks, such as “Grow Your Audience” and “Build Your Channel,” instead of having to sign up for individual, somewhat disconnected classes.

Additionally, YouTube has brought its YouTube Orientation Guide online. The course is a required prerequisite for any creators who wish to use the facilities. Previously, those creators had to attend often-packed and relatively infrequent classes to fulfill the requirement. Now, eligible creators will be able to complete the orientation from the comfort of wherever they have their computer and an internet connection.

A YouTube rep revealed stats which clearly show the important role YouTube Spaces have played in developing and producing online video in 2014. The Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, and New York Spaces saw more than 60,000 global creators attend around 800 workshops and collaborate on more than 2,500 projects. The 6,500 videos created in YouTube Spaces boast a collective 800 million views to date.
