A year after it was announced, PlayStation‘s first original series will become available. The Sony entertainment console has given March 10th release date to Powers, its superhero series/crime drama hybrid.
Powers, based off a graphic novel, is a ten-episode series about a pair of detectives who track down super-powered murderers. District 9 star Sharlto Copley and Susan Heyward star in the two lead roles, with comedian Eddie Izzard leading a strong supporting cast.
“I’m happy to report that production has wrapped on all 10 episodes of ‘Powers,’” wrote series executive producer Brian Michael Bendis in a blog post. “Under the skillful hands of our showrunners Charlie Huston and Remi Aubuchon (“Falling Skies”), our amazing directors, writers, cast and crew, the episodes are coming together beautifully.”

The March 10th debut date covers the show’s first three hour-long episodes, with a new episode arriving each Tuesday after that. PlayStation will give its users several ways to watch the series; the easiest way will be through a $50-per-year PlayStation Plus subscription, which will give customers access to all episodes of Powers, among other perks. Like Vimeo On Demand, PlayStation will also allow fans to buy episodes a la carte, and like Amazon, it will offer the first episode for free as a taster course for curious viewers.

Powers is PlayStation’s first foray into original programming, and its release is in line with Sony’s decision to brand its gaming console as an all-around entertainment station. Microsoft tried a similar initiative with Xbox, but those efforts ultimately ended in failure as Xbox Entertainment Studios was shuttered.
PlayStation is hoping for better luck, and if Powers‘ budget is any indication, Sony is taking this push very seriously. According to Variety, the series has a budget of around $2 million per episode, which should make for some spectacular thrills once March 10th rolls around.
