Chart Toppers
Felix Kjellberg‘s PewDiePie channel is back at the top of our Most Subscribed YouTube channels chart this month. The twentysomething gamer with a penchant for high-pitched expletives saw a 7% month-over-month increase in subscribers and added more than 738,000 new subs during the 31 days of December. Taylor Swift is next up in the #2 spot. The country-turned-pop star is still riding high from the recent release of her latest album 1989, though not as high as she was last month. Swift’s channel took a 12% hit in its subscriber acquisition rate to end the month with more than 722,000 new subs.
It’s a very Good Mythical Morning for Rhett & Link. The YouTube duo’s second channel devoted to a daily morning variety and talk show saw a 33% uptick in subs in December, jumped up to third place on the chart, and gained more than 547,000 subscribers in total on the month. Up next is our second female pop star in the Top 5, Ariana Grande. Online video viewers still want to love her harder and gave Grande’s channel nearly 530,000 new subscribers.
And rounding out the Top 5 is MarkiplierGame. The YouTube home of gamer Mark Edward Fischbach and his prolific catalog of self-described “hilarious gaming videos, original comedy sketches, animated parodies, and other various bits of entertainment” added a fresh 482,000 subscribers in the month.
Top Gainers
The honor of our Top Gainer this month goes to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
The YouTube destination for all trailers, rentals, and purchases of Sony Pictures’ catalog of feature films witnessed a massive 3,195% month-over-month increase in subscribers thanks to James Franco, Seth Rogen, and North Korean hackers.
Executives at Sony pulled Franco and Rogen’s feature film The Interview from theatrical distribution after suffering a massive hack and a series of violent threats against theaters that planned to show the film only to later decide to distribute the move online. Not only did The Interview gross more than $31 million in online sales, it also netted the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment YouTube channel more than 412,000 new subscribers and the #10 spot on the chart.
Channel Distribution
The Top 100 Most Subscribed YouTube channels in the month amassed in aggregate a total of 27,566,090 new subscribers. Here’s a look at the distribution of a few of those channels broken down by the most-represented YouTube Multi-Channel Networks on the chart:
VEVO: 18 channels in the Top 100 Most Subscribed, with Taylor Swiftthe top channel in the network at #2.
Maker Studios:12 channels in the Top 100, with PewDiePie at #1.
Machinima: 8 channels in the Top 100, with VanossGaming at #7.
Collective Digital Studio: 6 channels in the Top 100, with Good Mythical Morning at #3.
Fullscreen: 5 channels in the Top 100, with Connor Franta at #18.
BuzzFeed: 4 channels in the Top 100, with BuzzFeed Video at #17.
DEFY Media, OmniaMediaCo, StyleHaul: 3 channels each in the Top 100, with DEFY’s The Game Theorists at #36, Omnia’s iHasCupquake at #52, and StyleHaul’s zoella280390 at #35.
Big Frame, BroadbandTV: 2 channels each in the Top 100, with Big Frame’s Tyler Oakley at #27 and BBTV’s fernanfloo at #16.
