Issa Rae is best known as the creator of the hit web series Awkward Black Girl, but she has recently used her fame within the online video community to branch out and support a number of different projects. In addition to her upcoming half-hour sitcom on ABC, Rae has acted as producer for several different shows, including the Roomieloverfriends web series. Now, Issa is featuring a new series on her actingrl112 channel. It’s called The Michelle Obama Diaries, and it seeks to spell out the inner thoughts of the First Lady of the United States.
Michelle Obama Diaries features Yakira Chambers as the First Lady, and employs a simple format that cuts between a press conference and the White House couch. At the former location, Michelle answers questions with typical political talk that doesn’t particularly say much of anything. When the scene cuts back to Michelle’s living room, however, she gets a lot more candid, opening up about her views on other political ladies, TV, and her and Barack’s sex life.
I think that politics would work a lot better if every political Q&A session worked this way: what if, after dodgy half-truth, each political candidate had to sit down on his couch and tell us how he really felt. I can guarantee that Joe Biden would use the words “my friend
” a lot less in such a setting.Rae’s involvement in the series gives it a nice little boost, as she is hot stuff these days. Her I Hate LA Dudes sitcom is in production by Shonda Rhimes‘ Shondaland production group, and I can’t be the only one who noticed the shout out to Scandal, one of Shondaland’s other programs.
Even with that project lined up, we can only hope that Michelle Obama was hinting at a real project when she discussed “The Real First Ladies of Washington DC“, a reality show that would feature herself, Hillary Clinton, Barbara and Laura Bush, and “a sassy gay friend.” That is a series that absolutely needs to happen, and if we’re lucky enough, Issa will be at the helm.
