Alex Albrecht to Direct Sci-Fi With Your Money

Alex Albrecht, Streamy award-winning co-host of Revision3‘s Diggnation and Totally Rad Show will be directing a project off a script selected from a contest at Scripped.com and produced by crowdsourced funds from IndieGoGo. Albrecht’s deal will mark the first time ever that a film production will be based on a crowdsourced screenplay using crowdsourced funding.

Albrecht ran a month-long contest through Scripped.com searching for a short sci-fi thriller project for his directorial debut. The winning script, penned by Coy Lothrop, first-time screenwriter from East Texas, is a short sci-fi thriller called Neverland about a paranoid father whose work in inter-dimensional travel may put his only son in jeopardy.

“I’ve been really excited about the prospects of crowdsourcing for a number of years now.” Albrecht said. “After meeting Sunil at a UCLA business school panel we talked about crowdsourcing a sci-fi short film for me to direct. It seemed like a no brainer, the Internet helped kick start my hosting career why not leverage the Internet to help kick start my directing career. After running a very successful script contest Sunil mentioned that IndieGoGo was helping people crowdfund their projects and our project Neverland

could be the first fully crowdsourced project start to finish. I immediately signed on and I’m very excited to see what happens next.”

According to the project page on IndieGoGo, Neverland is already cast and will be shooting this summer. Funders like Felicia Day have contributed between $25 and $1000 over the past month, but with only $3,790 of the $35,000 goal reported as raised, Albrecht has some serious campaigning to do over the next two weeks.

UPDATE: We’ve just received the cast list from Albrecht: Henri Lubatti and Davin Ransom will star in the leading roles, with Legend of Neil‘s Tony Janning and Ctrl+Alt+Chicken‘s and First Things First TV‘s Heather Stewart as co-stars. Shooting is scheduled to begin July 30.
