Strike.TV Profile: Keeping Up with 'Joe & Kate'

As we still wonder whether or Hollywood will be bracing for another work stoppage, many of the fruits of the writer’s strike continue to wrap up on Strike TV. Some of the by-products were pretty darn good: see Tubefilter’s article on With the Angels finale and of course our reviews of the opening lineup, but a big question is what’s next for all the strike-generated material? Tubefilter caught up with Kate Purdy of Joe & Kate to find out what she thinks.

Tubefilter: How did you get involved with Strike TV?

KP: I was working on Unitedhollywood.com during the strike and some of the members began talking about creating another website where we could host original material. That became Strike TV.

Tubefilter: What was the impetus for doing this kind of series?

KP: I had done some research about the movement from radio to TV. Early TV programming consisted of bears walking on balls and men driving nails through their noses (not unlike early YouTube) – then eventually along came episodic shows like I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, and Burns and Allen. Joe and I decided we should do our own version of the tried and true relationship show, but for the internet.

Tubefilter: What is like working with your significant other?

KP: Amazing and sometimes difficult, but mostly amazing.

Tubefilter: Where do you think Strike.TV and it’s shows are headed?

KP: Hopefully, more and more shows will get funding (advertising) so that the creators can continue to make them.

Tubefilter: Do you have any other projects in the works with Joe other?

KP: We don’t right now.

Tubefilter: I feel like you guys really mastered the short-form format, do you think web TV is better when it’s short?

KP: We feel that people are used to watching minute long clips on-line, and that most people (including us) don’t have the patience for something longer. We wanted to keep our pieces as short as possible while still, hopefully, getting across a relatable moment in a relationship.

Tubefilter: What are you guys doing when you are not working on Joe and Kate?

KP: Playing Rockband.

Tubefilter: Will there be a second season of the show?

KP: Hopefully.
