After earning a B.S. in meteorology from Penn State in 1986, Jim has spent the past two+ decades at Accuweather – one of the largest providers of weather products and services in the US – refining his on-air forecast. He started the biz with your average, balmy delivery, but somewhere in the mid-90s, Jim decided to mix things up.
The 60 or so segments he tapes a day are emphatic, interpreting low and high-pressure systems with an off-the-cuff, reverent excitement usually reserved for sports announcers giving the play-by-play in the last minutes of regulation. Unlike Charlotte’s
Mark Mathis (who makes his broadcast more about him, than the weather), Jim’s walking a line just south of spectacle that makes meteorology informative and entertaining.I originally thought Jim was just another April Fools’ Joke, but he’s got a small following on YouTube as one of the “crazy weather guys” and is certainly the real deal. Check out the Slate profile below to see the mystery behind the man and find him daily on www.accuweather.com.
