Just when I think the Global Top 50 can’t be any more saturated with family-friendly channels, they go and increase their collective presence in the ranking. Only T-Series (ranked #1 again) prevented the entire top five from being made up of those hubs.

Time to learn
The popularity of early education videos on YouTube Shorts is no surprise. Some parents like to use YouTube as an automated babysitter, and when young kids get a hold of the Shorts feed, they tend to watch a lot of videos in rapid succession.
But even within that world, there are subdivisions taking shape. This week, I noticed that a lot of the educational channels in the Global Top 50 have the word “learn” somewhere in their titles. LearnToon is sitting at #7, and a Russian channel called La La Learn is its country’s sole representative at #9.
The chart embedded above shows that La La Learn has been one of the fastest breakout hits on Shorts in 2024. Back in August, it was getting a small fraction of its current viewership. Now it’s one of the ten most-watched YouTube channels in the world.
La La Learn’s initial uptick came at the start of the school year. Is that the explanation for the channel’s rapid rise to short-form prominence? Gen Alpha kids may be a handful in the classroom, but they seem to be showing an eagerness for learning, so long as that learning is mediated through a vertical video format like YouTube Shorts. Teachers, take note (it seems like many of them already have.)
Indian Tom and Jerry are back
KL BRO Biju Rithvik, which is ranked third in this week’s Global Top 50, has become a stalwart in our Tubefilter charts. It is in the rankings almost every week and has even held the number-one position at a few points in the past. But back in 2022, KL BRO was just an unsung channel bringing back the spirit of the animated series Tom and Jerry and translating it for South Asian audiences.
I don’t know if Diya Ishwarya will become a Shorts success story on the same level as KL BRO Biju Rithvik, but her channel is starting in a similar place. Like her Malayalam-language counterpart, Diya is paying tribute to the slapstick humor of Tom and Jerry, one Short at a time. Diya’s elder daughter can be either the cat or the mouse, depending on what the situation calls for.
Since April, Diya Ishwarya has been on an upward trajectory on YouTube. She just reached 20th place in the Global Top 50 after collecting 329.4 million weekly views.
Diya has a long way to go before equalling KL BRO’s chart-topping numbers, but the two channels should collaborate. I can already imagine them arguing over which cute kid will be Tom and which one will be Jerry.
Adriana is your Indonesian Shorts tour guide
Aside from the United States and India, Indonesia has the most representatives in this week’s Global Top 50, with four of them. That alone is not a surprise. Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous nation, and its citizens are in love with online video (especially as far as ecommerce is concerned).
With so much Shorts content coming out of Indonesia every day, it can be hard to keep up with the Southeast Asian nation’s key trends, creators, and stylistic choices. Luckily, we have Skolastika Adriana to guide us. She’s the local creator toting the golden play button in the above image, and she knows a thing or two about YouTube culture.
While Adriana’s core audience consists of her fellow Indonesians, there’s some broader appeal in her short-form content. Even without speaking Indonesian, I can learn some things about the videos she comments on based on her tone alone. And if I can do it, so can the millions of kids watching YouTube all over the world.
Adriana will have to rely on her global audience if she wants to move up in our Global Top 50. Her channel currently ranks 35th thanks to the 273.9 million weekly views she received. That sum was good for a 93% week-over-week increase.
