The Honeymoon is Over

And we’re back! After a few-week hiatus, the social media influencer extravaganza that is The Amazing Race Season 28 returns. But before we get to the action, it’s worth nothing that during the show’s time off a lot of fans were wondering the same thing:

For the uninitiated, an Express Pass is used to skip all tasks in a Leg and move directly to a Pit Stop. It’s a big deal. If an Express Pass were to show up this late in the game and a team were to use it sometime before the ninth leg, it could really shake things up. And shaking things up seems like exactly what the powers that be at The Amazing Race are looking to do as it’s revealed at the top of the episode an Express Pass is in play. Any niceties between the teams are likely to fall by the wayside, too, because the team to get to the Pit Stop of this leg first is the team who will get that coveted Express Pass.

Aside from all the Express Pass queries, the beginning of the episode six also touches on another subject fans have probably been wondering about during the break. What’s the status of #blodie?! In flashbacks to earlier episodes, we see Blair and Brodie cuddling in various airports and such, but we also hear Brodie saying that maybe after the Race something can happen, but that right now it’s game time. Looks like the honeymoon is over.

Teams head out of the snow and beauty of the French Alps and travel to Armenia, the first time the Race has ever traveled to the former Soviet Republic. Teams head to the Yerevan Opera House where they need to search for their next clue while actors dance on stage and a very familiar tune (Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”) blasts throughout. A challenge similar to this happened in a past season, which I’m guessing a few of the teams who are fans of the show had seen. I’m guessing that because a few teams immediately checked the seats for the clue. which is where it was located in said previous season. The twist this time around is the clues aren’t in the seats at all but being held by a man vacuuming the theater. As teams discover this, there is a clear lack of helping one another…something we haven’t seen in previous episodes. Again, looks like the honeymoon is over.

Korey has done his homework.

From here, teams have to run up a really freaking long set of stairs called The Cascade, which had Sheri remarking that “there’s a lot of bouncing of the boobs,” after which Cole most likely remarked to himself, “Mooommmm!”

A sampling of the steps. Trust us. There are a lot of them.

A sampling of the steps. Trust us. There are a lot of them.

Here is where teams stood as they reached the top of The Cascade.

  1. Frisbee Boys
  2. Team Rooster Teeth
  3. Team Family Time
  4. Team Dancers
  5. The Kings
  6. #Torey
  7. Team JuiceDad07

#BreakingBread All the Way to The #PartyBus

From the cardio workout that was The Cascade, teams then hit the Detour for this episode. It’s a choice between Thread or Bread. In Thread, teams have to participate in traditional rug making by completing 200 intricate stitches. In Bread, they need to make 12 traditional Armenian lavash. As the first two teams who get to decide, both Frisbee Boys and Team Rooster Teeth choose Bread, which then introduces our first hashtag of the episode, #BreakingBread.

Like most things Frisbee Boys do on the Race, they turn this task into a party and get the Armenian woman who are there to teach them how to make the lavash in on the action. They’re dancing, they’re singing…it’s “nice baking music!” as Brodie put it.

Speaking of making carpets, back at the Thread challenge. The Kings get held up trying to find a cab (there is a lot of that this episode) and #Torey is able to overtake them to get started on the task. But The Kings still finish the task faster. Meanwhile, upon figuring out how intricate this particular challenge is, Blair from TeamJuicyDad07 exclaims she is “never going to let my dog pee on a rug again.” She’s also going to make a DIY video of rug making when this is over. Team Family Time also does really well with this challenge and is able to get ahead of Team Rooster Teeth in the standings.

Cole just may have found his second calling.

The exact moment Cole realize he found his second calling.

Here is how teams shake out after the Detour, including which task they choose.

  1. Frisbee Boys – Bread
  2. Team Family Time – Thread
  3. Team Rooster Teeth – Bread
  4. The Kings – Thread
  5. #Torey – Thread
  6. Team JuicyDad07 – Thread
  7. Team Dancers – Thread

From the Detour, the teams need to head to Republic Square to take the No. 13 bus. In getting there, some switch ups occur in the rankings. The Kings pass not one, not two, but three teams (because as Blair points out, “they are magic”) while Team Dancers and Team JuicyDad07 are able to snag taxis quickly, whereas #Torey has difficulty hailing a ride and ends up in last place. But all is temporarily okay because it turns out that the No. 13 bus is apparently the #PartyBus. Now, I’m not sure if it’s just a fact of Armenian life that you rock out when you’re taking public transit or it’s just a fact of Armenian life when Race cameras are around, but it seemed like all the teams and the locals decided to have dance parties on the way to an unknown Road Block.

Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosey

After getting the partying out of their systems, it was now time for all business at the #RoadBlock. (And yes! That’s three hashtags so far this episode! And only one lame one so far! Maybe the social media producers at Race took my advice? ). The clue asks, “Who’s feeling drained?” which is competitive reality speak for “one member of each team has to perform an oil change on a taxi cab in the middle of freaking nowhere.” The catch to this Road Block is that only two cars can be up on the ramp for oil changing at a time, thus forcing some teams to sit and wait while others are performing the task. Take note because this becomes a point of strategy as the Road Block goes on.

Frisbee Boys and Team Family Time end up on the platform first and it quickly becomes apparent that having Sheri do the task for Team Family Time might not have been the best of ideas. While Kurt does fumble quite a bit as well, Sheri can’t even figure out how to get the filter off, thus bottlenecking the entire process for all the teams. After both Frisbee Boys and Team Rooster Teeth get through and Sheri is STILL stuck, Tyler sees an opening. He actually begins to help the other teams do their oil changes, knowing it’ll give #Torey a chance to get ahead of a struggling Team Family Time.

But the altruism of the teams at large is too much, and not wanting to leave Sheri completely screwed, both Burnie from Team Rooster Teeth and Scott from Team JuicyDad07 pop over to Sheri to see if they can help. Scott points out the reason Sheri is struggling is because she’s been trying to twist off the filter the wrong way. She’s been tightening it instead of loosening it all along. This evens things up between Team Family Time and #Torey. And now we have a footrace! Heightening the tension is the fact that once completed, the two teams taxis head off in different directions, so it’s hard to get a gauge on who is potentially going the wrong way.

In the end, Team Frisbee Boys take first and the #ExpressPass (so many hashtags!), which they’re concerned is only going to put an even bigger target on their backs. #Torey beat Team Family Time to the pit stop, but it turns out this pit stop isn’t really an elimination pit stop and the teams are still racing. So, Team Family Time is still in it. And Tyler and Korey of #Torey consider coming in second to last a good thing. They became a less of a threat while Team Frisbee Boys clearly became the team everyone else wants to stop.

Here is the standing going into the next episode (which features a choreography challenge…traditionally one that really shakes up the teams. It’s interesting to note we didn’t hear much from Team Dancers this episode and perhaps that’s why?):

  1. Team Frisbee Boys
  2. Team Rooster Teeth
  3. The Kings
  4. Team Dancers
  5. Team JuicyDad07
  6. #Torey
  7. Team Family Time
