FXX’s ‘Simpsons World’ Puts Every Single ‘Simpsons’ Episode Online

Fans of The Simpsons will now be able to binge-watch to their hearts’ content. FXX (the cable channel that acquired the rights to the show last year) launched its new Simpsons World app on October 21, 2014.

The Simpsons World lets users from virtually any internet-connected device select and view any of the 550+ episodes of The Simpsons they wish to watch (provided they have access to Fox’s FX spin-off channel via a cable or satellite provider subscription – otherwise they can only view clips). The app is available on desktop, Android, iOS, Xbox Live, Apple TV, and Samsung Smart TV, and also features an “Everything Simpsons” section full of curated playlists, behind-the-scenes clips, trivia, episode “popularity” graphs, and more. But one of the biggest selling points of the new app is its non-linear nature.

“We recognize that The Simpsons was found linearly on television for the last 25-plus years in syndication, where any episode could be served up in a given night,” said FX Networks COO Chuck Saftler, to IGN. “If you just flipped on the TV, anywhere across the country, you’d find an episode, and that was a great, easy experience. But we wanted to look at the new paradigms that we’re seeing in this SVOD space, this non-linear space, where people can create playlists and create the [experience] they want.”

While the app auto-plays a random episode upon launch, you can select your next episode choice from the library. And ultimately, the goal is to allow Simpsons World users to curate their own viewing experiences, stitched together from the 190+ hours of content. They can then share their personalized finished products on social media and other sites, much like YouTube users do now by selecting their favorite videos and placing them into playlists.

“We’ll make it easy for you,” continued Saftler to IGN. “We’ll curate for you; you can curate for you; you can curate for us. It can be lean-forward; it can be lean-back.” FXX expects this playlist feature will be ready sometime in January 2015.

The Simpsons World app is already quite thorough and interactive, but it’s not 100% complete (much like the show it’s based on). According to IGN, FXX has even more developments in the works for Simpsons World app, like a fine-tuned search feature that will allow you to cull through episodes based on a character, setting, quote, and more.

With all these current and upcoming features, as well as the long-standing history of The Simpsons, it seems FXX’s developers are aiming to have the Simpsons World app truly live up to its title.
