DIY Halloween

Halloween is three weeks away. What are you gonna be?

If you’re smart, you’re already thinking about a costume. Avoiding the last minute hysterics of trying to conjure something that’s equal parts appealing, believable, and easy is a luxury that limits the lameness of showing up to a party or someone’s doorstep as a “hipster,” “socialite,” generic major league athlete, some other subset of American culture that’s relatively commonplace, or a “sexy (insert occupation here).”

But it’s always hard to find something good. For inspiration and guidance, I generally start with my hair situation and build out from there. Last year I was sporting more of a mop, so I donned the uniform of a long-locked obscure 80s cartoon character that was a friend to those green, fearsome fighting heroes in a half-shell. This year I’m rocking some sick facial hair, so Lincoln is the obvious choice.

Though if I was a more DIY kind of guy, I’d take my Halloween costume cues from Indy Mogul’s (Tilzy.TV page) Eric Beck and follow the cuts of Threadbanger

For the month of October, both Next New Networks networks are dedicating episodes to the art of crafting your own Allhallows Eve attire.

Last week on Threadbanger’s Halloweeny Wednesdays, Corinne showed every would-be Tinkerbelle how to make some quick and easy fair wings, while this week Rob lets us in on a way to give otherwise sparkling white mummy sheets that aged decrepit look by way of 100 packets of earl grey tea.

On Indy Mogul’s Backyard FX, Eric has already transformed himself into a domestically competent Werewolf, but even creepier, he teaches us a way to safely tear apart other Halloween partygoers, limb from limb.

Check back with the shows for more costume ideas and hopefully you can avoid wearing one of those tuxedo shirts on the big night, or going as something even more scarily uncreative – yourself.
