If it isn’t already, CoolHunting (Tilzy.TV page) may become the internet’s go-to haven for all things, well, cool. Started in February 2003, by NYU Interactive Telecommunications grad Josh Rubin, the site catalogs and presents readers with interesting stories, videos, and products. It’s a space where design, technology, culture, and consumerism meet, while every aspect of this website screams “new” and provides a look at a world that many mainstream constants overlook.
Their video section is especially intriguing. Clips on how to make tofu, the “real” Spiderman, and milk carton racing are clips that reveal a kind of cultural identity that you wont find on anything like College Humor. ###
All of the videos are filmed by boutique NYC production house M ss ng P eces, and their entire catalog is astounding. If you’re a sucker for semantics, these videos will definitely catch your eye, and reinforce CoolHunting’s dedication to content that represent a parts of fringe consumerism that deserve more attention. But wait, there’s more!
Since April 2007, CoolHunting also gives you new and rare music to savor with Nugroove, which – like The Take-Away Shows (Tilzy.TV page) – offer some of the most
interesting clips in the industry. I’m always looking for different interpretations, changing sounds, and introspection of those who create the music that makes us shake our collective booties and that’s what Nugroove delivers in the form of mini-musical documentaries. As the site claims, the videos are “an exploration of musicians who are able to expand both what we hear and think.” They provide a sounding board for each artist so show more dimensions than a 2-d press release would ever allow.Vol. 8 of these clips shows Matthew Dear, Texan DJ an turntable scientist as he preps for his first live performance in support of his newest album release Asa Breed. The video also explores Dear’s thoughts on the production process, which is helpful to both inspiring producers and those who just wish to better understand the music industry. Other clips worth honorable mention are Vol. 4, which follows the Portuguese dance-a-holics The Brazilian Girls, and Vol. 3 with DJ Hess is More.
If you are serious about getting the jump on cool new music with insightful commentary, then this ice cold site is one hot spot you should keep an eye on.
