Americana on the Fourth of July

On Fourth of July, fireworks fill the sky, BBQs and beers flourish, but what about baseball, apple pie, and jazz? These classic examples of Americana aren’t generally associated with our Independence Day, but still evoke the same patriotic sensibility that I was taught to feel between reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing Fifty Nifty United States in elementary school.

On today’s holiday, I can’t help but be reminded of a folksy, rural nostalgia that I’ve never fully known. Luckily, the web’s here to help. Check out these slices of Americana to satisfy some classic American cravings.

Since 1818, the original Farmer’s Almanac has provided  American farmers useful weather and crop information blended with wit, wisdom, lifestyle tips, and a dash of wry cynicism. Watch the above to see a slightly self-indulgent but informative, Hallmark-esque presentation of the publication’s history and transition into a modern age.

Weird America

Hosted by Chuck Cirino, Weird America is the web spin-off from Weird TV, a mid-90s television program that looked into America’s cultural eccentricities. Cirino’s skill for uncovering oddities has led to some interesting fare, and my favorite is his interview with “junk keeper/collector” Sylvestor Williams.

Williams reverence for his findings is mixed with a laid-back attitude.  This and his charmingly casual demeanor are a combo that can’t help but make you smile.

And, of course, here are some customary fireworks.

Happy Independence Day!
