Disney Channel To Release 12 Short Films Across Its Digital Distribution Network

Disney is making online video production a major priority, and as first reported by Variety, the Mouse House’s latest initiative in the web space is a series of short films. The films, which are collectively referred to as Free Period, will launch across the Disney Channel’s digital distribution network, including its over-the-top apps, its website, and its YouTube channel.

For Free Period, Disney turned to kid-friendly filmmakers, including several who previously worked on Disney Channel TV shows and original movies. The resulting films all feature tween and teen protagonists, but in terms of the genres they cover, they are quite versatile, ranging from comedy to romance to fantasy to sci-fi.

The first of the 12 short films to see release is also called Free Period, and it comes from Kent Boyd, best known as one of the stars of the Disney Channel Original Movie Teen Beach Movie. The film is split into four parts on YouTube, and the first installment is, um, weird.

One new film from the Free Period collection will be released each day until August 18th, when the full slate will be completed. To check out the digital shorts the Disney Channel has to offer, head over to its YouTube channel. And if Disney’s latest digital initiative isn’t your jam, you can look into other web-based Mouse House productions. Those projects include series of short films created by the partners of Disney-owned digital network Maker Studios and launched under the Disney XD brand, as well as a short-form video app called Disney LOL.
