Aasif Mandvi’s Halal in the Family recently brought an activist twist to the “satirical family sitcom” format, but the Daily Show correspondent’s web series isn’t the only one drawing some laughs from repressed suburban emotions. On IFC’s Comedy Crib destination, viewers can find The Fergusons, a series of short snippets set at a family dinner table.
In each episode of The Fergusons, the titular family holds a conversation that slowly devolves into a ridiculous outpouring of repressed emotion. In the first installment, the mother (played by Very Mary-Kate’s Elaine Carroll) discusses the sensual touch of her former pottery instructor. This revelation drives her husband (Upright Citizen’s Brigade co-founder and Key & Peele showrunner Ian Roberts) up the wall.

In an e-mail, series creator Mitch Magee (who we’ve discussed before) describes The Fergusons as “a skewed family sitcom.” By the third episode, which features a telepathic bond between mother and son, things take a surreal turn.
A fourth episode of The Fergusons will debut on IFC’s website and YouTube channel. The series is specifically a part of Comedy Crib, the online video destination IFC launched late last year. Other web series include underneath the Comedy Crib banner include If I Were In It and Instant Gentrification.
